Class Description

There is so much more to math                                         than arithmetic, worksheets

and memorization. In this class                                     we will explore and investigate hands-on

on and real life arithmetic, number, basic algebra, geometry, logic, measurement and problem solving while traveling through time and across the world.

To lead us through our travels we will listen to stories from “A Little History of the World” by Ernst Gombrich and narrative stories about famous mathematicians. These fact-based stories will introduce us to the pyramids of Egypt, Mayan calendars, Plato the philosopher, number puzzles, , the Chinese Abacus, the Mona Lisa, Ada Lovelace and Albert Einstein to name a few.

Class activities will incorporate math with various branches of knowledge for example: trigonometry in nature (calculating the height of a tree) ratio in science (drawing the ratios of the human face) in art (creating an artistic display of Pi). Students at-home or independent math studies will be modeled with Montessori materials, manipulatives and real life situations in class (independently and in groups).  As we discover we will create a handmade “Book of Knowledge” documenting their learning. This year-long creation will include young Scholars art, writing, a timeline of history and various maps.

As Scholars we will also explore what it means to be a good scholar, what are the HABITS OF A SCHOLAR? To incorporate this into all of their learning each student will use a personalized Scholar’s Book that helps keeps track of their weekly assignment & schedule, learning activities, thoughts and reflections, inspirations and questions.
